Lilly Templeman Evaluation - Question 7
Question 7) Looking back at
your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from
it to the full product?
From looking back at my preliminary task I feel
like my editing and camerawork skills have improved. The differences between
preliminary task and the main task were that we had organised our time a lot
more for this main task (full product) compared to our preliminary. Although we
had done the same tasks to prepare ourselves for both of the tasks, overall the
full products tasks were a lot more detailed and we researched and planned for
these a lot more.
The planning that we done for our preliminary tasks
was a mind map of ideas into what we wanted to base the film on. When thinking
about genres, we wanted something that was obvious as we hadn't filmed before
so we didn't know what our camerawork and editing skills would of been like.
On the other hand with our main 2 minute film, we
decided that we would include:
- A storyboard - this would help us to plan out any scenes and also write about what camera angles would be used etc.
- A shot list - although we had the storyboard, when we actually filmed our piece we could then look at this as it would include: location, how long the scene lasts, what's going on in the scene. So from this it would keep us a lot more organised and would help us to keep on time whilst filming.
- A script - we decided to make a script to give to the actors when they spoke in our piece. Although we didn't have much speech when we did we wanted to make sure that the actors got it right and was the effect we wanted to achieve.
By also helping us to plan, we decided to create a
re-make of a film that was already available. Although we had done our
preliminary task, we had done that sooner into once we had started learning
about filming techniques etc. So by creating a re-make would help us:
- To see what we would exactly need to include
- Help us keep organised
- Help us arrange actors efficiently
- Improve camera and editing skills
From looking at both of the preliminary task and our film, it shows to me that the camera work has been improved over the period of time. I have also learnt to understand the 180 degree rule a lot better and it has become more clear to me that you must make sure that the camera is focused on one side, rather than switching as this confuses the audience.
One clip from our preliminary task that I have learnt a lot from is:

As our preliminary task was filmed off of my phone, with this clip I had forgotten what orientation I was filming in and filmed this in portrait rather than landscape. As we didn't want this couple of clips (that have the three split screens) to look different we decided to edit it in a way that wouldn't look as obvious.
Overall, I have learnt a lot from my preliminary task and my main media product as I have realised I need to concentrate a lot more when filming and be a lot more organised when filming/preparing to film.

Evaluation Question 6 Charlotte Johnson
Question 6
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
construction the product?
The strengths of the camera equipment is that the picture
quality was really good. When we saw the footage on the mac we were very happy
with the picture quality. The camera was very self explanatory, as was the
tripod. At first when I got the camera home I had to remember how to use the equipment
and I was a bit confused, however, I didn’t take to long to realize how to move
the camera around on the tripod and twist the handles to stop it from moving.
The only weakness was that I struggled trying to go in and out of focus, there
were a few times where I wanted to go out of focus but the only way to do it
was to move the camera but that just made the filming not look very good. In
the end I had to just film it normally.
We used the tripod whilst panning. This was quite nice because
it kept the camera nice and steady whilst I moved the camera around to follow
the character.
In terms of iMovie, I have learnt quite a lot. There were
two shots filmed in the same place that come one after the other. The colouring
in one shot was completely different to the colour in another shot. I had to
work out how to alter the colouring. Once I did, both of the shots looked
almost identical. There was also a shot that was filmed in the kitchen that was
a bit shaky. I used the steady cam button to make the shakiness go away. Before
I used it I dint think that it would actually work, however, once it was done
the difference was amazing.
I think that we worked quite well as a group, I think it
would have helped if we had both gone to do a bit more editing in or frees, but
I think that we communicated quite well with each other.
To log our coursework, we have been using Blogger. I find
this a really useful way of doing coursework as everything is in one place. I
found it really easy to use, it was a lot quicker to embed images than is I was
doing it on word as I only had to drag the images on to the page.

Lilly Templeman Evaluation - Question 4
Question 4) Who would be the
audience for your media product?
When looking at audience for our media product, as a group we decided to create a questionnaire as it meant that we would see directly what sort of films that type of person would be interested in. We received a variety of feedback back.
Although we have rated our film a 15 (due to the content that would be in it), our main audience would be around a 21 year old girl.
This is what our audience would look like:
They would shop in places like TopShop and River Island and their music taste would be anything that is in the charts currently, but most importantly they would be interest in a variety of films. Anything that looks good/has a good storyline they will be interested in. They also get influenced a lot by the use of technology and social media, so by incorporating a slight advertisement of our film onto social media will mean that they may be more interested to watch it. They are mainly into independent films (which explains some of the votes of the choice of an independent film in one of our questions in our questionnaire).
The reason as to why someone like this person above may watch our film is because they are interested in a variety of films and are quite open to watch any that are new out.
