The font for the titles in both of these openings are quite basic, this way they don't take to much attention off of what is happening in the background. In both of the openings the text is white, this is quite simplistic also. Both of the opening's text are effective because they are clear to read.

In the Forrest Gump film opening all of the titles are in the middle of the screen, this works quite nicely because when the text appears the background colour is contrasting with the text colour so use can see it clearly. In the opening of My Sister's Keeper, the titles change. Sometimes they are in the bottom left corner and some are in the right. We want to go with the same approach that the producers of My Sister's Keeper did and alternate between the two bottom corners. This will allow us to alter the position of our text based on the background colour so that it will always be clear and easy to read.

Both of the text in Forrest Gump and My Sister's Keeper fade in and out, we are also going to use the fade transition as we feel that it flows very nicely. As the opening to our film isn't very fast paced, we don't want the text to cut straight in and out.

This task has helped us to consider exactly how we want our film titles to look. We can now specialize our titles to look industry standard as we are using these films as our template.

Location Scouting

We decided to plan out exactly where we were going to film our whole film opening. We have different locations within the film opening, this includes:
  • Chelmsford Town Centre - High Street
  • A house
  • Boots
  • Public Toilet
We will be filming in Chelmsford Town Centre for a few of our scenes, mainly the scenes of the couple walking towards a shop and also one of the car parks in the near area.

The house is where the mum will be based throughout our whole film opening as this is where she lives with her family.

We will be filming some of the scenes in Boots because one of our characters will need to be seen in a pharmacy area.

Linking in with what they need to get in Boots, they will then need to be seen going into a toilet.

The reason as to why we have decided to organise our locations is because it will then be easier to have them prepared in advance as it will be more organised for us and also will hopefully be a lot quicker to film on the day as we then don't have to decide where to specifically film - we then have all that prepared and we can go straight to these locations.

The advantages of these locations are that they will be easy to find as they are central to where our group live. In addition to this, we also have back ups just in case some of these specific locations don't work.

The disadvantages for these locations is that we may not be allowed to film in there, for example Boots. If this happens then we can go to another shop (that is pharmacy based) and be able to film in there. This is the only disadvantage to our locations that we have scouted.

Moodboard for our film

By creating this mood board it has allowed both of us to visualise some of the aspects of our film, this pictures also work as a representation of some of the aspects even if it isn't exactly what it is going to look like. This has also made us think about the main themes of our film.

Film Opening Scenes & How The Whole Film Will Run

This is our shot list for our film opening, this will help us when it comes to filming the opening of our film. In addition to this, it also keeps us organised as we have all the scenes that we will need to film in front of us - so we can just cross them off as we go.

How the whole film will run -
Our whole film is going to run by looking at the aspects of 3 peoples lives. 2 of the lives will be shown throughout the film opening and the other character will be introduced later on in the film. In some way these characters will all link together (mum and the chav being related, mum being a surrogate for the business woman and the business woman being the lawyer for the chav). But the main focus will be on the mum and the business woman's life and how they are actually going to get through the whole surrogate process with the mums brother (the chav) being extremely violent towards her, putting the business woman's baby at risk. After a violent out burst on the chavs behalf, the baby unfortunately passes away and the business woman then finds out about it. As well as this happening, the business woman is representing the chav in court - because of passed events before the violent outburst towards the mum. When the business woman finds out about this happening she then refuses to represent him.

25 Word Film Brief

A film based on deceit and lies between friends and family which leads to serious consequences, many twists uncovered as the truth is later revealed.

By writing 25 word film brief helped us highlight the underlining tone of the film.

Lilly & Charlotte.

Certificate of our Film

The certificate of our film is going to be a 15. The reason for this is because, certain events happen in our film that would not be suitable for children under the age of 15.
This includes:
  • Drug Taking
  • Discriminatory language or behaviour
  • Some scenes of strong violence

There is a longer list of criteria for the age certificate 15, but these three points that I have listed below are the main ones that will be included in our film. Although, in our film there may not always be these points clearly shown - they may just be in certain points of the film when specific events take place.

Audience Questionnaire Results

Audience Questionnaire Analysis
Question 1) What is your favourite genre? (If other, what genre?)
  • Horror
  • Thriller
  • Comedy
  • Romance
  • Action
  • Other

By asking this question, will firstly show to us if this audience question will be allocated to the people that we ask. We got a mixture of results but there was no "other". In addition to this, we could also tell what type of person they were as to what genre they liked.

Question 2) What is your favourite 3 films in that genre?

We got a mixture of results from this question, it mainly was dependent on what type of genre that they preferred. By asking this question would show to us what other Drama films we would be in competition with and whether that particular Drama film fitted into the same sub-genre of ours.
Question 3) What sort of features do you expect a film opening of you chosen genre to have?
This was the same result as question 2, it was mainly dependent on what genre they preferred as to what features our audience thought should be included in their chosen genre.
Question 4) What age certificate do you usually expect a film of your chosen genre to have?
  • U
  • PG
  • 12A
  • 12
  • 15
  • 18
  • X-Rated
This question was placed in this questionnaire to help us to see what age certificate is preferred within a wider audience. The main results that we got were that people generally preferred the 15 rating of a film of their chosen genre.
Question 5) How old are the characters usually seen in your preferred genre of film?
  • Under 12
  • 12-17
  • 18-25
  • 26-39
  • 40+
I set this question in place so that we could have an rough idea as to how old the characters need to be/play in our film for our audience to like them. Depending on their chosen genre, will then depend on how old some of the characters need to be.
Question 6) What generic conventions would you usually see within a drama film?
I decided to start including our chosen genre into the questions so that we could get a better analysis of what the audience thought of our chosen genre 'drama'. The main result that we got from this question was - "that the audience can relate to the character in some way, a form of realism and normally a happier ending". Going from these results, our film will hopefully hold that the audience can relate to a character within our film and we are including a form of realism.
Question 7) Can you name a Drama film that includes the conventions that you have listed?
By asking this question, will then see what films are already out there with some of the generic conventions we will want to include within our own film. The most films that were named were - Creed, The Revenant and Everest. By having these films listed, means that we can look into the film in more detail and see what type of people tend to view these specific type of drama films.
Question 8) Have you seen more independent drama films or mainstream drama films?
This question will help us to choose whether we will be a mainstream or independent film. It was a 50/50 result for this question, as half said mainstream and the other half said independent.

Question 9) Who do you normally watch a drama film with?

This question will help us to understand who our audience are watching films with, in addition to this it will also help us to see whether our film is suitable towards a family audience and also can incorporate on what age certificate we should put our film at. The results from this question was mainly family and friends. So depending on the ages of their family and friends will then mean whether they can watch the film or not.

Question 10) Can you name a drama film that has not used the normal conventions properly? (If yes, has the film still been good?)

The reason we asked this question, is because a drama film has a lot of sub-genres and not all of the sub-genres have used the normal conventions as they should. From this question, we got the result of the only film being Titanic. Throughout the whole film of Titanic, it does follow the normal conventions properly - until the end. The end of the film is when the conventions are forgotten about and our audience answered that the film has still been good.

Question 11) Does the film opening of a film determine whether you want to continue watching it or not?

By asking this question, shows to us whether specific people only continue to watch films depending on how good the film openings are. The result that we got from our audience was yes it does depend on how good the film opening is.

By asking an audience questionnaire, means that we can see specifically what our audience would like to see not only in normal film openings but specifically in drama openings of films.

Research into Audience Figures

By researching into audience figures of our specific genre, will help us to look at what films are being seen the most within the genre (so we can then see what the narrative of the film is/what the film is about).

We decided to look at the IMDB website as it shows us the most popular films and also gives us information on the films.
The three most popular films that there are at the moment are as follows:
  1. The Revenant (2015)
  2. Room (2015)
  3. The Martian (2015)
As you can see all of these films are very recent as they have only been made last year. On the IDMB website, it gives each film a rating out of 10. The ratings that are given for each film that I stated above is below:
  • The Revenant - 8.2/10 -

From these screenshots of the website, it shows to us the demographic breakdowns of the rating out of 10.
In this picture above it gives a breakdown of gender and age of who is actually voting for the film, how many votes there are and the averages that are being scored by the vote.

  • Room - 8.3/10 -

From this screenshot, it shows me the demographic breakdown about the film and what the actual percentages are that people are giving it.

From this screenshot it shows the breakdown once again of the different genders and ages that are voting for how good the film is.

  • The Martian 8.3/10 -

From this screenshot, it shows the demographic breakdown about the film and what people are actually deciding to rate it.

From this screenshot, it breaks down the audiences rates into the different ages and genders of who has actually viewed the film.

By looking at the demographic breakdown of each of the three favourite films, then shows to us how many people are watching the films and what they are actually rating the films.

We are going to include characters that will be relatable to the audience that will specifically want to watch our film. In addition to this, by asking an audience questionnaire will help us to see any conventions that they may want to see in that genre and also anything they will want us to specifically include.

How we will attract the audience

When making our film opening, we must consider the audience when thinking of this. This is important because we will want our audience to want to watch more of the film. Factors that can effect the audience watching our film, are as follows:
  • Audiences that can relate to the specific characters - within our film, the audience may be able to relate to the characters and what is going on in their lives within the film. This may influence them to watch our film because they are then interested to see how each individual characters life is working/what is going on in there's compared to the audience member watching it.
  • Audience that like the genre (drama) -
  • Certificate of the film - 15. If a new PG and a 15 comes out a 16 year old may sway towards the 15 because they feel like they can relate to it more.
By looking at recent films such as 'The Revenant', will help us to analyse as to what specifically made them so great. The reason as to why 'The Revenant' got so much accolade at the Oscars was because, it has two great well-known actors (Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy). So by having well-knwon actors within the film, then helped to attract a wider audience. In addition to this, it had a larger budget so it was able to afford a lot better equipment that may of attracted the audience once again.
